One of the most frequently diagnosed disorders among kids, today, is the ADD or ADHD.
What is ADD / ADHD? Well, it is the Attention Deficit Disorder or the Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder, mostly occurring among children, while also prominent in adults. It is a disorder of the brain in which the victim is unable to pay attention to one particular thing and is hyperactive most of the time. 3 – 5 % of schooling children are found with this disorder.
An image of a kid who is difficult to control is prominent in the mind when thinking of a kid with this problem. The ADD / ADHD symptoms include the following.
•The kid in inattentive, yet not hyperactive – a mild symptom.
•The kid is hyperactive yet pays attention to what is being said or taught – mildly severe symptom.
•The kid is being inattentive, impulsive, and hyperactive – most common and most severe of the ADD / ADHD symptoms.
Mostly children with ADHD are easily distracted, impatient; seem to be not listening to what you say, inattentive, hyperactive, energetic, creative than ever, flexible, interruptive, fidgeting, etc. There are better and worse sides of a child being a victim of ADD – like being creative, energetic and flexible. But the ill effects are too much to look at the brighter sides.
ADD / ADHD diagnosis is can be performed under the careful supervision of a physician. The concerned doctor asks various queries about a child’s behavior to his teacher, parents and friends to find out if there are any basic causes of the disorder. Sometimes lengthy questionnaires need to be filled up. There is a practical method of diagnosis of this disorder by checking the amount of gluten protein in the child’s diet. Gluten is supposed to be one major culprit in the occurrence of ADD or ADHD in children. To find out if the child has a gluten allergy or is suffering from celiac disease or anything like that, can be a great help in the diagnosis of ADHD.
Treating this disorder can be a tough challenge. There are no definite and specific
ADD / ADHD treatments. What parents can take up as treatments are three things.
•Let the child be – Let the kid allow learning from his own mistakes and letting experience teach him. Accept the situation as it is.
•Modifications in the kid’s behavior – Try convincing the kid to change hi behavior. Though this may not be possible by directly instructing the kid, do it via indirect methods. Like, for example, if the kid is not attentive towards studies, fun and learn can be one option of getting him attend the things and concentrate.
•Medications – There are a few medications available for ADHD treatment, like Ritalin, Adderall, Cylert, Dexidine, and so on. These can give faster results than other conventional methods, but are equally perilous due to unwanted side effects. And since kids are going to be exposed to these medications, the danger increases even more.
Restricting gluten in diet – Since gluten is one of the worst things that can cause and trigger ADHD, preventing it from diet of the affected kid can help in some way.
